Flyer girls win, Brainerd boys runners-up

ST. CLOUD — Little Falls won the girls team title and the Brainerd Warriors were runners-up in the boys division of the season-opening St. Cloud Apollo Relays Tuesday at Riverside Park.

The Flyer girls team of Chelsea Rutz, Maria Hauer, Mattia Hendrickson and Kaitlin Geisenhof finished first on the 2.5-kilometer course.

Brainerd’s boys team included Zean Baker, Riley Nelsen, Noah Baker and Gerrit Garberich.

“Zean and Riley were the fastest of all the guys skiing there,” Warriors co-head coach Mary Claire Ryan said.

Gabriella Haire, Allison Kosobud, Michaela Quast and Sarah Fairbanks composed the Brainerd girls team.

“Our two state returning skiers (Kosobud and Fairbanks) we were very happy with,” Ryan said. “Michaela had a good cross country running season and she’s finally skiing like I’ve been waiting for her to do. She was much more aggressive.”

Riverside Park makes snow, which enabled the meet to be conducted. It was the first time on snow for the Warriors and many other teams.

“It was like artificial snow, when it gets pushed around it gets grainy after you ski on it for a while, and underneath it was icy,” Ryan said, “but we’re not complaining. We’re just happy to ski. With all the dryland training we’ve done the last three weeks it was a boost to everyone’s morale.

“Going up hills the first couple times was pretty tough. We had a lot of tired skiers on the way home. It was a 2-lap course with two steep climbs and two screaming downhills.”
