Warrior Dance Team: Warriors win kick competition
SATURDAY — The Brainerd Warriors dance team kicked its way to first place in the kick division of the 22-team Wayzata Invitational Saturday.
It’s Brainerd’s first win at the Wayzata Invite since 2006 and second “metro invite” victory this season.
“We won at Apple Valey earlier in the year and now at Wayzata so we are flying high,” said Warriors head coach Cindy Clough. “We also placed second at the 19-team Blaine meet. It’s a great feeling going into sections because we are confident we can be up there. All the section teams, who we need to get past to go to state, were at the meet.
“We finally beat (St. Cloud) Tech with this routine. They peaked a little earlier than us, so we had hopes to clean up and beat them.”
Brainerd finished 10th in the jazz competition, which Clough said was a dissappointment despite the tough competition.
“We did feel we had a far stronger performance than what we did at Blaine last week so we were disappointed in our placement,” Clough said. “The week before we had tied Blaine and beat out all other section teams with the exception of Tech. This week it flipped and Andover, Blaine and Duluth East came out ahead of us.”
The Warriors will have one week before the conference meet and two weeks before sections to improve.
