Dance team: Both Warrior teams head to state

ELK RIVER — For the first time since 2002, the Brainerd Warriors won the Section 4-3A kick title Saturday to advance to the state tournament.

The Warriors made it 2-for-2 by placing third in the jazz competition to advance to state in that discipline.

“We peaked at the right time,” said Warriors head coach Cindy Clough. “We had our best performance of the year in both kick and jazz. We were so proud of how our kids controlled nerves and performed today. If there is a day to bring it to the table, sections is the day.”

Brainerd performed to “Let’s Get Glam” for its kick performance to claim its first section title in 10 years. This despite advancing further in the state tournament than the previous eight of nine section champions.

Clough called Saturday the best performance by her jazz team, which danced to “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.”

“We had our highest scores so far this year and could not be more thrilled,” Clough said. “We danced first of the day, so generally scores are a bit lower when you dance first, so we were happy with scores.”

Brainerd was edged by Duluth East last year in the jazz competition. This year those teams flipped as East placed fourth. Clough figured jazz’s third and final state spot would be between Brainerd, East and Andover.

“We had all gone back and forth at various meets throughout the year,” she added. “After conference last week, we decided to hit it harder and changed an entire section of choreography, worked on cleaning and timing.

“We also worked on confidence. Our kids have had so many jazz disappointments this year that we worried they did not really believe how good they have become. It was nice to see them have such an outstanding day and the results show through with placement and scores.”

Captain Macy Anderson was happy to see the team’s hard work pay off. Nicole Gervenak said the victory only motivates her to want to work harder in preparation for the state tournament.

“We have pushed so hard this week so it was exciting to get what we felt we deserved,” fellow captain Allie Spiker said. “Our jazz team has moved mountains this past week and I am so proud of them.”

The state dance tournament is Feb. 17-18 at Target Center in Minneapolis.

Last year, the Warriors placed sixth in the state kick competition.

Eden Prairie, which finished second last year, won the Section 2-3A title in kick, followed by Wayzata and Hopkins. Wayzata won the jazz followed by Maple Grove and Eden Prairie.

Section 1 and 3 compete this Saturday.

The Warriors will have a state kickoff show 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at Brainerd High School.
