Adapted Floor Hockey: Warriors Annable answers in OT

Austin Annable felt like Patrick Kane.

The Brainerd Warriors senior defenseman mimicked the NHL star Monday as Annable ended a 3-3 overtime thriller with his second goal of the Northern Division game against Mounds View.

Annable navigated the Riverside Elementary gym as time ticked down on the overtime frame. The vocal leader of the 2-2 Warriors unloaded a slap shot in mid-stride past Mounds View goalie Mark Bruan for a 4-3 Warrior victory.

“I was thinking, we’re already 3-3, might as well go and if it doesn’t go in, well, we played a great game,” said Annable. “As soon as I scored that goal I felt like Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks in Game Seven of the Stanley Cup playoffs. I couldn’t hold my excitement and I just had to run and celebrate.”

Annable was joined in the celebration by his teammates as the victory snapped a two-game losing streak.

Annable scored the game’s first goal in the first period, but it was answered by Devian Thompson almost a minute later.

The Warriors claimed a 3-1 lead in the second thanks to goals by Brenen Myers and Devin Annable. Mounds View battled back thanks to two more Thompson goals to send the game into overtime.

“We were exhuasted,” said Brainerd head coach Todd Person. “We got beat in the last game because we weren’t hustling to the puck. We talked about that a lot in practice this week and again tonight before the game that we needed to be first to the puck. You could really see the effects of that toward the end of the game, but they didn’t quit.”

Brainerd outshot Mounds View 56-13, but couldn’t sneak many past Bruan. The acrobactic wheelchair goalie was diving for loose pucks and gloving shots in mid air to finish with 52 saves.

“He was very athletic and going to the floor a lot to cover some of those pucks” said Person. “When he wasn’t recovering them the net was open and it was just a matter of getting our players to follow the shots and put those rebounds in.”

Brainerd’s Anna Wahl made 10 saves and Devin Annable, Dalton Schreier and Brock Saatzer were credited with assists.

“I like how my team stuck in there,” said Austin Annable. “I don’t like to say I’m a leader and all, but I like trying to help them get goals and play their hardest every night and every play. We lost two games and I just wanted to bring it back to Brainerd and show the team what we’re made of.”
