Girls Basketball: Warriors give Bison a game - for a half
BUFFALO — Gretchen Kletscher led the Warriors with 21 points in Brainerd’s 66-49 loss to the 20-3, Class 4A sixth-ranked Buffalo Bison Saturday in a Section 8-4A game that was closer than the final score indicated.
The 4-14 Warriors trailed only 30-28 at the half and were in contention midway through the second when they went cold, scoring only four points in six minutes while the Bison hit four threes to break the game open.
“I have to give the girls credit — they did a lot of things right,” said Brainerd coach Brian McAllister. “We got beat by a good team that’s ranked sixth in the state. They pressed us most of the game and we only had 13 turnovers so the girls played well.”
Maria West added 13 points and McKenzie Veith eight for the Warriors, who will probably be facing Buffalo again in the opening round of the section playoffs.
“The girls surprised themselves (Saturday) and showed that they could play with them,” said McAllister. “If we decide to play, we can be a pretty good basketball team.”
