PIERZ — The top-seeded Pierz Pioneers registered nine pins, a technical fall and two forfeit wins shutting out No. 9 Columbia Heights 81-0 in the quarterfinals of the Section 7-1A team tournament Tuesday.


Pierz’s Nathan Tomala registered an 18 second pin at 170 pounds for the quickest of the night.

Pierz, ranked 10th in Class 1A, will advance to the section semifinals Friday in Ogilvie.

Earlier in the evening, Columbia Heights eliminated No. 8 Crosby-Ironton 42-34 in an opening round match.

Caleb Voss (106), Cody Lasher (120), Joe Sura (132) and Cole Grinsteinner (285) all won with pins for the Rangers.

AITKIN — The No. 3 seeded Aitkin Gobblers opened the quarterfinals of the Section 7-1A tournament with a dominating 56-18 victory over No. 6 seeded Patrick Henry. The Gobblers won their first nine matches, including seven by fall.

NEW YORK MILLS — Tony Reurink and Issac Malone each recorded a pin, but the eighth-seeded Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines were upset by No. 9 Pelican Rapids 42-29 in Tuesday’s Section 6-1A wrestling tournament.

The Wolverines finished the season 5-18. Pelican Rapids then lost to top-seeded New York Mills 65-7.
