Aitkin’s Mehr scores 1,000th point at Morris

University of Minnesota-Morris women’s basketball player Emily Mehr of Aitkin was named the UMAC Player of the Week for the third time this season Feb. 14.

Mehr scored her 1,000th career point in the Cougars’ 85-52 win over Northwestern Feb. 11.

For the week, Mehr averaged 26 points and six rebounds per contest, making 61 percent of her attempts.

Needing 19 points to reach 1,000, Mehr scored 20 in the first half. The milestone basket came with 3:08 to play in the first half.

Mehr was nearly perfect in the first 20 minutes as she went 9-of-11 from the field in the half.

She finished the night with 28 points and has with 1,009 with two games left in the regular season.

Martin returning letterwinner for Luther

DECORAH, Iowa – Joel Martin, a 2010 graduate of Brainerd High School, and the Luther College baseball team will open the season March 10 against Concordia-Moorhead at the Metrodome in Minneapolis for a doubleheader beginning at 10 p.m.

Martin, a sophomore pitcher, made 12 appearances in 2011, including three starts en route to his first collegiate letter. He posted a 3-1 record and 4.04 ERA.

Pitchers, hitters camp set at Forestview

A preseason pitchers and hitters camp, for baseball players in grades 8-12, is scheduled at Forestview Middle School in Baxter.

Dates are Feb. 20, 22, 27, 29, and March 7 and 14.

Pitchers will begin a throwing program to get a head start on the upcoming season. The program will consist of stretching, running, pitching to a catcher, building a pitch count, and fielding as well as receiving tips on mechanics, grip and mental preparation. Pitchers camp runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Hitters camp will run from 7:45 to 9:15 p.m. Hitters will be hitting at stations as well as hitting off pitching machines and live pitching in batting cages. Hitters will receive tips on mechanics and mental approach at the plate. Batting gloves are strongly recommended.

Cost for each camp is $100. If a player is interested in attending both camps the cost is $150.

The camp is sponsored by, and instructed by, members of the Fort Ripley Rebels and Brainerd Bees amateur teams.

Fast-pitch academy scheduled in Baxter

Brainerd Community Education will sponsor the Minnesota Fast-Pitch Academy at Forestview Middle School in Baxter.

Registration deadline is Feb. 27. The academy will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 3. Fee is $90.

Ages 10-18 are eligible to participate. The academy coordinator is former University of Minnesota head coach Julie Standering. She will be accompanied by former Gopher and former Brainerd Warrior player Abby Rehberger.

This workshop will help participants acquire the skills, drills, and mental preparation and approach to the game.

There will be one coach for every five players working with age groups 10-12 and 13-18.

Participants should bring their own lunch and drinks.

An informational meeting for all coaches and parents of ISD 181 Community Education/Baxter Parks and Recreation fast-pitch softball is scheduled at 6 p.m. Monday in Room 2412 at Forestview Middle School.
