Make way for yet another dance team trophy as the Brainerd Warriors placed third in Saturday’s state high kick dance tournament.

“We had our two best kick performances of the season so we could not ask for more than that,” said Warriors head coach Cindy Clough. “The top three teams were incredible so it was an honor to be up there. We danced well at prelims and even better at finals.”

Brainerd scored the most difficulty points out of the top three teams with a 74.

The Warriors finished securely in third as fourth-place Apple Valley had 20.5 rank points. St. Cloud Tech, Brainerd’s biggest local rival, finished sixth with 26 rank points.

“The dancers had an incredible amount of pressure going into state this year,” Clough said. “Everyone had high expectations since we had placed so well at several big meets. We had to work to relax and help them realize that, while we are at state, we needed to relax and enjoy it.

“We had prepared and we just needed to do our best. Our best was good enough to earn a medal.”

Alli Spieker and Rachel Stout were named to the Class 3A state all-tournament team.

On Friday, Brainerd’s jazz team finished eighth.

“We did not have as strong of showing as we had hoped,” Clough said. “We had a slight fall and an execution error. We felt our turns were the best they had been all year and we really danced well over all in terms of energy and timing.

“Placing eighth was great for us. We were happy to be up that high. Two years ago we were eighth, which is the highest we have ever been. Last year, we didn’t make it out of our section so we were thrilled to be at state in both divisions this year.”
