Gymnastics: Grausam returns to state

Grausam returns to state

ST. CLOUD — Madison Grausam saved her best for last.

On her final vault — the last of Saturday’s Section 8-2A meet — Grausam stuck her feet, raised her hands and enjoyed a 9.4 to send her back to the Class 2A individual meet.

The Brainerd Warriors senior advanced to state as a sophomore on floor and just missed going as a junior.

“It was the best vault she’s thrown in her life,” said Warrior head coach Dave Maras. “She was the last kid up on vault and she nailed it.”

Grausam almost made it a double as she finished fifth on beam with a 9.1. She was clipped by Bijanca Clark of Moorhead, who scored a 9.25 for fourth place.

The top four individuals in each event and the top team, St. Cloud Tech, will advance to the state tournament.

The Warriors finished third with Rogers in second.

“We competed well,” said Maras. “Our team actually had the second highest score on bar and second on beam. That’s pretty impressive.

“Every one of our kids hit bars. We had four out of five hit on beam and that’s huge in the section meet. We came into the meet with a good attitude and competed very well.”

Rachel Hoffman’s seventh-place 8.9 was Brainerd’s top bar score. Mikayla Cerney finished eighth and Lonie Anderson was ninth.

Grausam was 12th on floor to finish seventh in the all-around. Hoffman was 10th in the all-around with a 35.15

“There was a lot of really good individuals,” Maras said. “Rogers and Elk River split into two teams so that changed the scope of things a little bit. At the same time you still have to do your thing and compete and see where that puts you.

“It was good to finish third. Apollo was fourth and they had beaten us twice during the year. We came on strong at the end of the season.”
