Class 3A Wrestling: Flyers falter late in consolation championship

ST. PAUL — Five straight victories, including three by pin, was how the White Bear Lake Bears captured a 36-27 Class 3A consolation championship victory over the Little Falls Flyers Thursday.

The 10th-ranked Flyers built a 27-10 lead after Keith York’s 11-7 decision at 160 pounds. That’s when the Bears grizzled out their string of five straight wins.

Justin Jenks, Frank Wilczek and Dillon Kifer picked up pins for the 23-10 Flyers. Also winning during the consolation championship match were Conner Scherping, Levi Hoffman and Yorek.

“We’re very happy with how the kids wrestled,” said Flyers head coach Mike Hendrickson. “We did a lot of moving around because it was a chess match and things were going well for us. We were able to move Kifer up a weight class because the kid they had at 138 wasn’t very strong so we moved in our sophomore (Levi Hoffman) and he was able to win against us.

“Then Dillon went up against a really tough kid, but he was still able to get a pin.”

The loss of Conor Swanson to injury in the Section 8-3A individual tournament hurt the Flyers in the upper weights were they did even more shifting. Hendrickson said David Copa was handed a questionable call on a head lock that could have helped the Flyers stave off the Bears’ comeback bid.

Little Falls advanced to the consolation final by eliminating Champlin Park 39-28 in the consolation semifinals. The Flyers lost to second-ranked Hastings 47-19 in the first-round match.

“On paper we weren’t supposed to even touch Hastings so we did a lot of studying on Champlin Park because we figured we would meet them,” Hendrickson said. “We knew they were weaker on the lower weights so we needed to make hay there and get some points and we did.

“The turning point came at 195. Trysten Ross was holding his own against a very good wrestler. Trysten was down by five and then the other guy just kind of stopped wrestling. Trysten went in for a move and that’s when we learned that they kid had broken his arm. We got the six-point injury default and that was the turning point in the match.”

Jenks was 3-0 with three pins. Wilczek also went 3-0 with two pins to move to 39-3 on the season. Kifer was 3-0 with two pins to improve to 40-3.

Connor Scherping finished 2-0.
