ST. PAUL — Stunned.

That’s the best way to describe how the Class 2A state individual tournament panned out for Staples-Motley’s Blake Petrich and Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus’ Peter Harrison. Both seniors fell victim to opening-round losses only to have their opponent lose in the championship quarterfinals to end their season Friday at the Xcel Energy Center.

Petrich, ranked No. 1 all season at 180 pounds, finished his season 40-2. Teammate Blake Miller won his first wrestlback match Saturday with a 2-1 decision over Colin Ayers before being eliminated by Adrian’s Jaydan Bullerman 2-0.

Fellow Staples-Motley Cardinal David DeYonge lost his wrestlback match at heavyweight.

Harrison, Class 2A’s third-ranked 160 pounder, fell to top-ranked Taylor Lewandowski, who then lost to the eventual state champion John Redepenning of Rockford. Lewandowski finished third.

Harrison finished his season 38-5.

Fellow road crew members Drey Loge and Darian Rubner won their first wrestlebacks match only to fall in the next round. Loge lost a 5-0 decision to Andrew Fogarty of Windom. Rubner lost a 4-1 decision to Charlie Pesch of Kasson-Mantorville.
