AREA BOYS HOCKEY: Flyers hang on to win consolation championship

MINNEAPOLIS — Little Falls watched a 4-goal lead vanish as Rochester Lourdes roared back before the Flyers posted a 5-4 win over the Eagles in the Class 1A consolation championship game Saturday at Mariucci Arena.

The Flyers, who were outshot 36-16, took a 4-0 lead into the third period, but Lourdes scored three times in less than five minutes to pull within one.

Senior forward Joey Hanowski gave Little Falls a 2-goal cushion with a score at 12:43 of the third.

Defenseman Karl Krecke made it interesting with a goal for the Eagles with 27 seconds to play, but Little Falls hung on for the win.

Hanowski, who was named to the 1A all-tournament team, scored his third goal of the tournament to put the Flyers on the scoreboard first.

He scored again in the second and again in the third to complete his hat trick to go along with an assist.

The other Flyers’ goals were scored by junior forward Luke Majerle and senior forward Michael Holthaus.

Junior goalie Michael Stumpf earned the win as he turned away 32 shots.
