All-Area Girls Basketball: Cardinals collect three spots, Pequot two

An area-best 23-5 record, a Mid-State Conference title and a spot in the North Subsection 6-2A championship game helped Staples-Motley land three Cardinals on the 2012 Brainerd Dispatch All-Area team.

Pequot Lakes, which finished fourth in the Class 2A state tournament, is only other school with more than one player on this year’s team.

Players for the all-area team are nominated by their coaches and then selected by the Dispatch sports staff.

The All-Great River Conference selection finished with 324 points (12.0 per game), 172 rebounds (6.4), 33 assists, 36 steals and 27 blocked shots. She shot 43.3 percent from the field and 66.0 percent from the line.

The All-Mid-State Conference selection finished with 450 points (16.1 per game), 138 rebounds (4.9), 54 assists, 67 steals and nine blocked shots. She shot 34 percent from the field, 29 percent from 3-point and 65 percent from the line.

The Granite Ridge Conference most valuable player finished with 504 points (18.7 per game), 262 rebounds (9.7), 55 assists, 52 steals and 110 blocked shots. She shot 42 percent from the field, 26 percent from 3-point and 67 percent from the line.

The first-team All-Central Minnesota Conference selection finished with 386 points (14.3 per game), 260 rebounds (9.6), 54 assists, 55 steals and 102 blocked shots. She shot 54 percent from the field, 33 percent from 3-point and 79 percent from the line.

The Northwoods Conference Player of the Year finished with 789 points (27.2 per game), 120 rebounds (4.1), 105 assists, 133 steals and seven blocked shots. She shot 48 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point and 74 percent from the line.
