COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Raiders win one of three on opening day

ROSEMOUNT — Rebecca Anderson collected four hits and Carlie Sweet slugged a 3-run homer to lead the Central Lakes College Raiders to a 17-8 season-opening win Friday at the Irish Sports Dome.

Anderson finished 4 for 5 with four runs, two doubles and a triple. Jenni Smolke was 3-4. Winning pitcher Sam Harting struck out three and walked one in a complete game.

CLC lost its second game 13-3 to Itasca. Alanna Hansen was 2-3 and drove in two runs for the Raiders.

Itasca’s Nicole Gross allowed CLC seven hits to get the win.

“She was the top pitcher in our league last year,” CLC coach Greg Medeck said, “and she pitched well today.”

The Raiders were edged 3-2 by Hibbing in their final game. Smolke was 2-3 with a double, Hayley Hornick was 1-3 with two runs and Nicole Marcy was 1-3 with a double.

Winning pitcher Jenna Massingill allowed CLC just five hits.

“She’s something special,” Medeck said. “She’s out of Nashwauk-Keewatin and had offers to pitch at a high level, but chose to stay home.

“(Gross and Massingill) are probably the two best pitchers we’ll see all year and we were mildly productive. Once we get a chance to see more live competition and more live pitching our bats should come around.”

Medeck said Mesabi, Itasca and Hibbing each made spring trips, each playing about a dozen games.

“We know we’re going to be in the mix in the conference,” he said. “We got a good evaluation today.”
