Boys Golf: Warriors win conference opener

Email

RICE — After a cold, miserable morning 18, the threesome of Tommy Olson, Aaron Rich and Thomas Stoxen rebounded with 78s for tri-medalist honors that led to the Brainerd Warriors 17-stroke victory in Monday’s Central Lakes Conference meet at Oak Hill Golf Course.

TJ Perpich shot an 80, but incurred a four-stroke penalty for having too many clubs in his bag. His 84 still helped Brainerd to a conference opening 318.

The Warriors played 18-holes Monday morning at the TPC Golf Course in Blaine for the Blaine Invite. The team then rushed the hour and 20 minutes to Oak Hill. The players were rushed off to their tee boxes as soon as they arrived to the second course.

“These guys were worn out from the morning round, which was extremely cold and a very difficult course,” said Warriors head coach Brian Wallace. “To come back and to play as well as they did was a phenomenal thing. It was still really cold when we teed off the second time. I think it was 37 degrees at Oak Hill. They got out of the van and got on to carts that took them to their first tee box. They had no warmups after sleeping in the van.”

In the season opener earlier Monday, Stoxen and Rich shot 88s as the Warriors finished 14th in the Blaine Invite at TPC Golf Course. Nik Helland’s 89 was the Warriors’ next-lowest score.
