GOLDEN GLOVES BOXING: Rubin wins Upper Midwest championship

Nate Rubin of Merrifield captured the 132-pound Upper Midwest Golden Gloves Boxing tournament championship last weekend at Northern Lights Casino in Walker.

Sergio Garcia (123 pounds) of Fergus Falls and Rubin will advance to the national tournament April 30 through May 5 at Mesquite, Nev.

Heavyweight Glenn Sommars (White Earth), Kevin Harper (114, Wadena) and superheavyweight Jose Perez (Wadena) lost in the finals.

Wadena’s John Johnson (141) and Cole Cottrell (165) lost in the semifinals to eventual champions.
