Warrior Girls Golf: Brainerd's Muesing, Pequot girls lead the field

PEQUOT LAKES — The Pequot Lakes Patriots placed fourth in last year’s Class 2A state meet, but never did what they did Thursday at Grand View Lodge’s Preserve.

The Patriots lead the field of the two-day Pines/Preserve Invite by shooting a first-round 333 to take a nine-stroke lead into Friday’s final round.

Savannah Stone fired a 78 in Pequot’s first tournament of the season. She was followed by Maggie Heggerston’s 82, Erika Schwalbe’s 86 and Sam Olmscheid’s 87 for Pequot’s best score over the last two seasons.

Brainerd’s Jenny Muesing didn’t suffer the Warriors Athlete of the Week jinx as she leads the field with her first-round 74. The sophomore carded four birdies and eight pars to go with six bogeys. She had six one putts and hit 10 greens in regulation for her 2-over-par score.

“She was on cloud nine when she came into the clubhouse,” said Warriors head coach Brian Stark. “That’s how you should feel when you’re leading the pack.”

Hannah Moen carded a personal best tournament score of 88 and helped Brainerd land in third place behind second-place Grand Rapids. The Warriors got a 91 from Shannon Chalupsky and a 95 from Brittany Bostrom.

“I was really impressed with the girls today,” said Stark. “I had them all set goals prior to the round and every one of them either beat or matched their goal that they had set. They were focused and excited to get out and play. A few of them wanted to score better, but there is always tomorrow’s round.”

The second and final round will be at Grand View Lodge’s Pines Golf Course. That’s where Staples-Motley’s Emily Israelson will look to move up the charts. The Cardinals sophomore shot a first-round 81 to lead the Cardinals to a 14th-place showing.
