AREA BASEBALL: Ehnstrom helps Gobblers to seventh straight win

ONAMIA — The Aitkin Gobblers made it seven wins in a row by defeating the Onamia Panthers 12-1 behind a stellar performance from sophomore Nathan Ehnstrom on the mound and at the plate in Thursday’s Great River Conference game.

Ehnstrom pitched all five innings giving up just one hit, striking out 11 and didn’t walk a batter. At the plate, he went 3-3 with a double, four RBIs and a run scored.

Peter Zasmeta only had one hit, but walked twice and stole six bases, bringing his season total to 39. Last year he stole 38. Coach Jeremy Janzen said

Zasmeta is nine shy of the state record with three games remaining.

Jaron Brezinsky went 2-3 with two stolen bases, two runs and an RBI. Dean Lynn finished 2-4 and Spencer Goble added a double.

LITTLE FALLS — Joe Hanowski went 3-4, hitting two home runs and knocking in four runs for Class 2A’s top-ranked Little Falls Flyers as they notched another conference win Thursday, beating Zimmerman 8-6 in a Granite Ridge Conference game.

Luke Thoma doubled and drove in two runs for the undefeated Flyers and Tony Arnold was 1-3 with a double.

Gabe Ploof pitched four innings, struck out nine and allowed just three earned runs.

Dorn, Pierz sweep

PIERZ — Brady Dorn ripped a home run in each game and the Pierz Pioneers swept the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers 11-10 and 7-1 in Thursday’s Central Minnesota Conference doubleheader.

Pierz was down 9-0 in Game One when it exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third, keyed by Dorn’s three-run homer. Ben Boser and Logan Meyer both went 3-4 with doubles.

The Pioneers grabbed a 3-0 first-inning lead and never looked back in Game Two.

Dorn finished 2-3 with a home run, two RBIs and run scored and Nick Lochner cranked out a double.

WALKER — Nathan Holm hit a solo home run and struck out seven in five innings as Pine River-Backus collected an 11-1 mercy rule win over Northland Conference opponent Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Thursday.

Holm also added a double and three RBIs while allowing no earned runs and only two hits and a walk through five innings.

Russel Burgoyne added two hits and a pair of RBIs, and Beau Howard added an RBI double. Freshman Nick Gravdahl went 2-3 while driving in a run for the Tigers.

STAPLES — Jordan Wick notched three hits, scored three runs, and drove in one while collecting the win on the mound as Staples-Motley edged Breckenridge 10-7 Thursday in a non-conference game.

Jalen Busker and Devon White each added three hits for the Cardinals.

WADENA — Christian Berg scored two runs and had a double, triple and two RBIs for the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines as they scored a 13-12 victory over Ottertail Central in a non-conference game Thursday.

Teammate Ryan Redfield was 3-4, driving in two runs and scoring two.

David Najjar pitched six innings, striking out 11, walking two and knocking out a double.
