SOCCER: Elks Soccer Shoot scheduled May 19

The Elks Soccer Shoot, a free soccer contest for area youth ages 6-13, is scheduled Saturday, May 19, at the Southdale Soccer Field on County Road 48 in Baxter.

You do not need to be registered in a soccer program to participate.

This is a fun contest for youths 6-13-years-old who want to try their skills at kicking a soccer ball through pre-set goals.

Registration is at 9:30 a.m. The contest runs from 10 a.m. to noon. The eighth annual event is sponsored by the Brainerd Elks Lodge along with the Brainerd Community Education soccer program and LAYSA.

The event is open to youths within a 40-mile radius of Brainerd. It tests individual skills of kicking a soccer ball through various-sized squares. Scoring is on a point system based on shots made in various squares. Prizes/medals are awarded to the top three finishers in each division.

Local division winners will advance to district competition. District champions advance to state.

District competition will be July 14 at Forestview Middle School in Baxter. State competition is Aug. 24-26 at the Elks Youth Camp on Pelican Lake.

The entire program is free of charge. There are four divisions for boys and four for girls: 6-7, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Age is determined as of Aug. 1, 2012.

If you have any questions, call Dick Lyscio, local/district soccer chairman, (218) 851-1753.
