Flyers win conference, but finally lose

NEW MUNICH — Joey Hanowski went 3-4 with a double two runs scored and an RBI and Luke Thoma went the distance to pitch Class 2A’s top-ranked Little Falls Flyers past sixth-ranked St. Cloud Cathedral 6-0 Saturday in the Melrose tournament.

The victory handed the Flyers the Granite Ridge Conference title.

Matt Stumpf was 2-4 with two RBIs for the Flyers

Thoma struck out one, walked one and allowed eight hits in the shutout.

The Flyers lost their first game of the season 6-5 to former Central Lakes Conference foe Rocori. It was the first loss of the season for the Flyers, who stand at 18-1.

Mitch Gregory went 3-5 with a run. Hanowski drove in two and Collin Eckman went 3-6 with an RBI.

Michael Holthaus also had two hits for the Flyers.

S-M drops two

STAPLES — Jordan Wick went 1-3 with a double and Tyler O’Brien added a hit and drove in the only run for Staples-Motley in an 8-1 Game One loss to Perham Saturday.

Perham swept the Mid-State Conference doubleheader to claim the conference title thanks to a 9-5 Game Two win.

Five Cardinals recorded multiple hits in the second game. Jalen Busker, Kyle Janson, Devon White and Jordan Jenkins each drove in a run for Staples-Motley and Austin Redemski added two runs scored.
