AREA BASEBALL: Wadena-DC, PR-Backus advance Melrose upsets Staples-Motley
WADENA — Kenny Sakry went 1-2 with an RBI triple and drew two walks as No. 3 Wadena-Deer Creek edged No. 6 Ottertail Central 3-2 in the West Subsection 6-2A quarterfinals Tuesday.
Ryan Redfield earned the win by pitching two innings of no-hit ball in the seventh and eighth to close out the game. Redfield struck out four and walked two in the relief appearance.
David Najjar went 2-4 with a walk for the Wolverines and Christian Berg added a double.

PINE RIVER — Nate Holm went the distance, striking out nine and walking two while allowing no runs on two hits, as third-seeded Pine River-Backus edged No. 6 Menahga 1-0 in the North Subsection 6-1A quarterfinals Tuesday.
The Tigers scored their only run on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning.
Derek Sonenstahl, Russ Burgoyne and Cole Larson each went 1-3 for Pine River-Backus while Beau Howard added a 1-2 performance.

Jacob Vetsch was tagged with the loss for Staples, walking five in four innings. Jalen Busker relieved Vetsch in the fifth. Staples-Motley pitchers hit three batters.
Jordan Wick and Devon White each contributed doubles for the Cardinals while Brent Sterricker singled for the third and final hit for the Cardinals, who finished 13-8.

Pillager’s season ends
PIERZ — Matt Doss went 2 for 3 with an RBI as the No. 5 Pillager Huskies lost to the top-seeded Braham Bombers 6-3 in the East Subsection 5-1A quarterfinals Tuesday.
Pillager’s Jeff Flickinger and Adam Obermiller each added RBI doubles as the Huskies ended their season 7-13.
In Tuesday’s first game, the Huskies beat No. 4 Ogilvie 11-3 with Connor Uselman ripping two doubles and driving in two runs.
Cole Hunstad was 1-3 with three RBIs and Adam Obermiller scored two and drove in two runs for the Huskies.
“We played a great second ballgame but Braham managed to take the lead,” Huskies coach Jacob Mehr said. “We had a great season.”

SAUK CENTRE — Nick Greiner went the distance for Pequot Lakes, striking out eight in 9.2 innings while allowing only three earned runs off of nine hits and four walks, as the No. 5 Patriots fell to No. 4 Sauk Centre in a 3-2 pitchers’ duel Tuesday.
Michael Knoblauch also pitched a complete game for the Mainstreeters, striking out nine and walking two while allowing only two earned runs.
The game was tied in the bottom of the 10th at 2-2 when the Sauk Centre leadoff hitter got on base, stole second and was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. A single followed and scored the game-winning run.
Aspen Florey went 2-4 and scored on a passed ball for the Patriots, while Zach Northenscold added a 1-3 performance with an RBI. Hunter Leslie, Zach Cogan, and Austin Mesenbrink also added hits for Pequot Lakes, which finished 8-12.
