AREA BASEBALL: Aitkin, Wadena-Deer Creek advance to subsection finals

AITKIN — Dean Lynn’s two-out, two-run single in the third was all the offense the fourth-seeded Aitkin Gobblers needed to eliminate No. 5 Esko 2-0 in Wednesday’s opening round of the Subsection 1, Section 7-2A playoffs.

Nathan Ehnstrom struck out seven, walked one and allowed two hits in the shutout.

Aitkin’s Alex Bobenmoyer started the Gobblers’ offense with a single. Peter Zasmeta singled and Ehnstrom walked to load the bases for Lynn’s single.

Melrose 4

ST. CLOUD — Third-seeded Wadena-Deer Creek defeated No. 7 Melrose 6-4 in the West Subsection 6-2A semifinals Wednesday night at Faber Field.

The Wolverines (14-7) will play top-seeded Long Prairie-Grey Eagle for the subsection championship at St. Cloud at 7 p.m. Thursday. LPGE defeated No. 4 Sauk Centre 14-1 in the semifinals.

Crosby-Ironton 0

CLOQUET — Zach Olander and Matt Malloy were the only two Ranger batters to collect hits as No. 8-seeded Crosby-Ironton lost 10-0 to No. 1 seed Cloquet in the opening round of the Section 7-2A tournament Wednesday.

Michael Hoge took the loss for the Rangers.
