Area Boys Golf: PR-B's Mager headed to state

FERGUS FALLS — Cody Mager shot an 84 in Monday’s Section 6-1A final at Pebble Lake Golf Club to place sixth as an individual and advance to the Class 1A state tournament.

Mager a junior at Pine River-Backus was the fourth individual, not on the winning Mahnomen team in the section tournament.

Teammate Saul Sasse fired a 93 to place 24th.

The Pillager Huskies finished fourth as a team. Logan Jackson led the Huskies with an 87 to place him 12th individually. Michael Pettit and Dallas Ruis each fired 94s.

Team scores: 1-Mahnomen 339, 2-Ottertail Central 347, 3-Nevis 370, 4-Pillager 373

Section individual champion: Beau Hanson (Frazee) 72

Cardinals lead after first round

SARTELL — Nick Forsberg’s 3-under 69 catapulted the Staples-Motley Cardinals to a first-place team score of 291 in Monday’s opening round of the Section 6-2A tournament.

Michael Strain carded an even par 72 followed by Trent Hagenson’s 74 and Andrew Israelson’s 76 to give the Cardinals a 34-stoke lead heading into Tuesday’s final round. Mitch Hagenson’s 77 was in reserve had the Cardinals needed it.

Pequot Lakes also advanced to the second day with a team score of 328. The Patriots were led by Bradley Boldt’s 81, 82s by Nevin Greer and Kevin Beltz and an 83 from Cole Bliss.

The top four teams and nine individuals not on those teams advanced to the final round.

WALKER — Wadena-Deer Creek’s Jacob Goeden shot a 91 in the final round of the Section 8-2A tournament Monday at Longbow Golf Club.

The Wolverine did not make the individual cut, which was a 77 from Roseau’s Jared Strand. Detroit Lakes won the team title with a 308.
