Area Boys Golf: Strain, Cardinals win 6-2A championships

SARTELL — Michael Strain was a model of consistency during both rounds of the Section 6-2A tournament at Blackberry Ridge.

The Staples-Motley Cardinals’ senior shot rounds of 72-71 to claim the section individual championship and help the Cardinals defend their team championship with a two-day 581.

The Cardinals improved on their first-round 291 by scoring 290 Tuesday. They beat second-place Pequot Lakes by 71 strokes.

“We didn’t want to let up at all,” said Strain. “We wanted to shoot well again today.”

Strain said winning the section individual title was a goal of his, but he was more happy about his team’s performance.

“Today was fantastic,” Strain said. “It was great to see Andrew (Israelson) coming up big with a 68 and Nick (Forsberg), he didn’t have the best round today, but he still finished well.”

Israelson shot a tournament-best 68 Tuesday to place second individually with a two-day 144. Forsberg followed his first-round 69 with a 77 to place third individually at 146. Dakota Waverek went low with a 74 to shoot 154.

Trent Hagenson shot a 155 and Mitch Hagenson fired a 156. That 156 would have been the low score for St. Cloud Cathedral and Pequot and the second-lowest score for Melrose. Mitch Hagenson would have tied for second individually.

“It’s really important going into the state tournament to have six guys that can score,” Strain said. “It makes everyone feel more secure and there isn’t that much pressure for certain players to have to score all the time. We have a solid six guys that can shoot 72 on any given day.”

Pequot jumped up two spots from fourth to second with its 324 Tuesday. The Patriots finished with a 652, which was 10 strokes better than Melrose and 18 better than Cathedral.

The Patriots’ Bradley Boldt shot a 162 to finish two strokes away from advancing. Nevin Greer fired a 153, Kevin Beltz 164 and Alex Goerges 165.
