Area Girls Golf: S-M's Israelson wins Section 6-2A title

SARTELL — Emily Israelson is going back to the state tournament.

The sophomore from Staples-Motley followed up her opening-round 77 with a 75 Tuesday during the Section 6-2A final round at Blackberry Golf Club.

Her two-day 152 gave her a stroke victory over Becker’s Kourtney Williams

“The first hole, I topped it off the tee box and I doubled right off the bat,” said Israelson. “But I just stayed positive and came back with a birdie and let loose from there. I made a lot of pars.

“My putting was really good. I didn’t have any 3-putts so that helped me a lot. I had 32 putts, which isn’t that great, but I’ll take it. I hit 14 greens (in regulation).”

Israelson tied for ninth at last season’s state tournament. Her early goal this time is to finish better and possibly break into the top five.

Pequot Lakes’ Savannah Stone tied for 14th in last year’s state tournament. She’ll get a chance to improve on that as she captured the final individual spot after a one-hole playoff. Stone shot rounds of 79-85 for a 164 and fifth place.

She joins teammate Maggie Heggerston, who placed third individually with a two-day 155. She followed her first-round leading 77 with a 78 Tuesday.

The Pequot Lakes team placed second, seven strokes behind section champion St. Cloud Cathedral.

Team scores: 1-St. Cloud Cathedral 341-341 — 682, 2-Pequot Lakes 339-350 — 689, 3-Rocori 334-356 — 690, 4-Becker 348-352 — 700
