BOYS TENNIS: All three area doubles teams eliminated

MINNEAPOLIS — Of the eight teams advancing to the Class 1A state doubles quarterfinals, only four were from public schools.

Two of those teams were from Staples-Motley, which saw both Josh Solway-Shane Suess and Guthrie Coughlin-Austin Hirschey advance out of the opening round.

The twosome of Coughlin-Hirschey received a first-round bye before falling to Mitch Elofson-Nathan Huber of St. Peter 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

The lone win from any of the area teams came from Solway-Suess, who dispatched Foley’s Benjamin Hageman-Sam Wittwer 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round. They fell to Breck’s Tucker Sjoblad-Andrew Engel 6-1, 6-3 in the championship quarterfinals.

Aitkin’s pair of Alex Anderson-Dan Klucas dropped into the consolation quarterfinals after Blake’s Taylor Parr-Evan Cater beat them 6-3, 6-4.

Breck’s Austin Wong-Brenham Wong eliminated the Aitkin duo 2-6, 6-2, 10-3 in the consolation bracket.

“The competition was stiff, as was expected,” said Aitkin head coach Joe Walz. “We played well enough to win, but came up short on the scoreboard. We took a set against Breck and should have closed that out, but got a little tentative. You need your ‘A’ game when you play at state. and we were playing at a ‘B-plus.’”
