Cragun’s Legacy Courses is expected to attract some of the best Junior Golfers in the Midwest when it hosts the USA Junior National Golf Team tryouts Friday through Sunday.


Approximately 100 of the region’s most talented Juniors, in five different age divisions will compete for a qualifying spot to advance to the Optimist International Championship at the PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., in July.

Area golfers returning to compete for another chance to play at PGA National include Thomas Stoxen, East Gull Lake, and Maggie Heggerston of Pequot Lakes. Stoxen and Heggerston qualified at last year’s Tri-State Optimist Qualifier and advanced to the PGA National where they competed in the Optimist International Championship. More than 600 Juniors from more than 30 countries participated.

Other area golfers registered to compete are Tom Burgstaler, Ironton; Dakota Waverek and Mitch and Trent Hagenson of Staples-Motley; Reed Hines, Little Falls; and Kevin Beltz, Pequot Lakes .

National Midwest Region tryouts this weekend

Chris Foley Golf School is hosting tryouts for the USA Junior National Golf Team Midwest Region Friday and Saturday at Cragun’s Legacy Courses.

Foley, coach of the USA Junior National golf team (Midwest Region), said in a news release this is the nation’s first high-performance golf training program for Junior golfers across the USA.

Along with the team’s exclusive golf equipment partner, Callaway Golf, Foley is offering Juniors from throughout the USA a coaching and training program designed for high-performance athletes.

Three teams are made up of Juniors and consist of the following: Future Stars, Pre Elite and Elite teams.

Foley’s mission is made up of four points:

• To mentor, guide and encourage athletes and to make a difference in their lives.

• To provide young people with a world-class coaching environment in a positive and inspirational manner.

• To develop athletes into nationally and internationally ranked junior golfers.

• To provide athletes with some of the best coaching and training facilities in the country.

Lipton Tea Lakes Cup

begins in July

The Lipton Tea Junior Tour provides area golfers with access and competition on some of the best courses in the Lakes area (Pines, Preserve, Deacon’s Lodge, Legacy, and Classic).

The Lipton Tea Lakes Cup is open to boys and girls on golf teams from the Brainerd lakes area. Summer residents are also eligible to participate. Players age 13 through graduating seniors are eligible.

Each resort course will have a team consisting of up to 10 boys and five girls. Players will be divided equally among resorts with priority given to players living in proximity to a resort and players that work at a respective resort. One pro from each course will be the team captain.

Cup tournaments will be played on Sunday afternoons. Each course will host one event.

• July 1, Pines, 3 p.m. shotgun.

• July 8, Classic 3 p.m. shotgun.

• July 15, Preserve, 3 p.m. shotgun.

• July 22, Deacon’s Lodge 3 p.m. shotgun.

• July 29, Cragun’s Legacy 3 p.m. shotgun.

Team event and individual stroke play are scheduled each week and aggregate total will be tabulated for the five events.
