VFW Baseball: Sophomores split

CARLOS — Blaine Grater had a day Friday.

The Brainerd sophomore VFW player, drove in the game-tying and game-winning runs in a 4-3 Game Two victory as Brainerd split with Alexandria.

Brainerd lost the opener 5-1.

In the fifth inning of the second game, Grater was hit by a pitch to drive in the tying run. Then in the seventh, his single gave Brainerd the final run of the game.

He finished 2-3 with the two RBIs. Logan McElfresh and Nate DeChaine each hit doubles and Drew Sannes was 2-4.

Derek Knoll pitched the first six innings. He allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits and four walks. He struck out two. T.J. Graumann pitched the seventh for the save.

In the first game, Sannes had an RBI single and McElfresh and Grater each had a single for Brainerd.
