AMATEUR BASEBALL: St. Mathias, Lastrup advance to region tournament

FORT RIPLEY — The St. Mathias Devils, who finished third in the Victory League North Division regular season, captured the North Division playoff title Sunday by defeating the Fort Ripley Rebels 10-5 in the second game of the double elimination tournament.

For the third time this year, Josh Haberman pitched a complete game against his former team, improving to 2-1 against the Rebels. He also earned a save in last week’s 8-7 win over Fort in the first round.

The Devils clinched the North’s No. 1 seed in next weekend’s Region 8C tournament at Pierz. It will be the Devils’ first region appearance since 2007.

Fort Ripley failed to make the region for the first time since 2006.

St. Mathias’ Blake Thiesse was 3-5 with a triple, walk, RBI and two runs. Jake Francis was 3-6 with a double and two runs. Cody Stange was 3-5 and Ryan Thiesse and Luke Boran each had two hits for the Devils.

The Rebels were led by Nick Jelacie, who was 3-5 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Rhett Williamson was 2-5 with a double and RBI. Bill Sather doubled and drove in a run.

St. Mathias drafted Brett Kramer of Fort Ripley and Nisswa selected Logan Kalis of Fort Ripley.

Lastrup 10, Buckman 0

LASTRUP — Chad Weiss pitched a complete game as the Lastrup Lakers captured the East Division playoff title Sunday with a 10-0 win in eight innings over the Buckman Billygoats.

Weiss allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out five.

The Lakers were led by Reggie Litke and Rick Schlieman. Litke was 2-4 with a double and three RBIs. Schlieman was 2-4 with a double and two runs. Teammate Jason Sadlovsky was 2-3 with a walk, RBI and a run.

Nate Neeser doubled for one of the Billygoats’ two hits.

Buckman and Lastrup advance to next weekend’s Region 8C Tournament at Pierz. Both teams added a pitcher to their staff for the region, with Lastrup selecting Harding’s Mitch Dorn and Buckman taking Pete Herman of the Pierz Bulldogs.

FORT RIPLEY — Logan Kalis pitched a complete game as Fort Ripley forced a second game against St. Mathias for the North Division championship with a 4-1 win earlier Sunday.

Kalis tossed a 3-hitter and struck out 10 with four walks.

Jason Sather led the Rebels with two hits, including a double, and scored twice.

The Devils scored their lone run on a groundout by Zach Heidmann.
