Avon nips Lastrup to clinch state bid
PIERZ — The Avon Lakers clinched the first of four spots available to Region 8C for the Class C state tournament when they nipped the Lastrup Lakers 2-1 in a winner's bracket game Sunday night.
Taylor Holthaus hit a leadoff home run in the Avon fourth and Rick Hendrickson delivered a sacrifice fly in the seventh to give Avon a 2-0 edge.
Lastrup scored its run in the eighth on an RBI single by Rick Schlieman, who had three hits, including a double.
Jake Eichten, drafted pitcher from Opole, was relieved by Adam Harlander following the Schlieman hit. With runners at first and third and two outs, Harlander struck out Chad Weiss to end the Lastrup threat.
Harlander struck out the first two Lastrup batters in the ninth and got a game-ending ground ball to third as Avon advances to the state tourney for the first time since 2004.
Lastrup plays an elimination game against St. Stephen next Saturday at 11 a.m. at Avon.
Avon will play Saturday at 4 p.m. against the Sobieski/Buckman winner. Sobieski and Buckman played later Sunday night.

PIERZ — John Schumer pitched six innings to get the win and Brandon Hellmann earned a save as the St. Stephen Steves eliminated the St. Mathias Devils with an 8-7 win in Region 8C play in a losers bracket game Sunday.
St. Mathias scored twice in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Josh Haberman and a throwing error.
The Devils had the potential tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth, but Hellmann, a draftee from St. Wendel, got pinch-hitter Brandon Owen to line out to shortstop to end the game.
Trent Phelps went 2-3 with an RBI to lead the Steves.
Brad Waytashek was 3-4 with a walk and two runs for St. Mathias. Jake Francis and losing pitcher Zach Heidmann each had two hits, including doubles, and Blake Thiesse and Haberman each added two hits for the Devils.
St. Stephen will play at Avon next Saturday at 11 a.m. against the Avon/Lastrup loser.

Nisswa 6, Freeport 5
PIERZ — Mark Germain singled in Jason Roepke in the bottom of the ninth to give the Nisswa Lightning a 6-5 win over Freeport and eliminate the Black Sox from the Region 8C tournament Sunday.
Germain finished 3-5 with an RBI and run scored. Aaron Jenkins was 2-4 with a sacrifice, RBI and run. Drew Boland and Mike Zauhar doubled for the Lightning.
Chad Hess was 3-5 with two doubles and an RBI for the Black Sox. Teammate Eric Evaslage was 2-4 with a home run, three RBIs and a stolen base.
Luke Schumer went four innings in relief to get the win. He allowed two runs and three hits, struck out four and walked none.
Nisswa advances to next weekend’s action at Avon, where it will play another elimination game at 1:30 p.m. against the Sobieski/Buckman loser.

PIERZ — Chad Weiss pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts as Lastrup edged Nisswa 9-8 in Saturday’s opening-round game.
Luke Schumer went 3-5 with a double and scored three runs and took the loss with one-third of an inning in relief.
Jason Roepke went 2-4 with a two-run homer and picked up four RBIs on the day for Nisswa.
Weiss gave himself some run support by going 2-5 and scoring two runs. Rick Schlieman went 1-4, belting a 2-run homer for Lastrup.

Buckman 7, St. Mathias 3
PIERZ — Corey Egan went 2-4 and drove in two runs for Buckman as the Billygoats defeated St. Mathias 7-3 in an opening-round game Saturday.
Jeremy Monson picked up the win for Buckman, allowing three earned runs off of 11 hits while striking out four.
Josh Haberman struck out seven in 5.2 innings for the Devils and was tagged with the loss.
Jake Francis led St. Mathias at the plate with a 4-5 day, while also driving in a run, scoring a run, and swiping a base.
