MAPLEWOOD — Brainerd’s dream of advancing to the 15-U Babe Ruth Midwest Plains Regional Tournament in Liberal, Kan., came to an end Monday evening when they lost 6-2 to Hightower in the Babe Ruth State Championship.
It was the team’s third game against Hightower in three days, with Brainerd winning 11-7 on Saturday before losing 2-0 Sunday in the double elimination tournament.
On Friday, Brainerd defeated Stephen-Argyle 6-2. Paul Augustinak threw the complete-game victory. Evan Brecht hit two doubles and drove in three runs and Tory Miller was 2-3 with a home run.
On Saturday, Brainerd topped Hightower 11-7 with Hayden Bukowski tossing the win. Brianerd collected 14 hits. Peter Dahl was 3-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Brecht was 2-4 with a double and two RBIs and Taylor Strieff was 2-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
Brainerd fell to Hightower 2-0 Sunday setting up Sunday’s final game. Logan Madsen gave up two solo home runs to account for all the runs.
The winner advances to the Midwest Plains Regional in Liberal, Kan.
