In pool play, the Aces finished second, losing to the Eden Prairie Mini Eagles 24-21 and losing 26-21 to Sioux Empire Fitness and beating Fred Wells 30-13.

In their final match, the Aces lost to the White Bear Lake Snapping Turtles 24-17.

GREATER MINNESOTA STRING SYMPHONY

FINISHES THIRD

The Greater Minnesota String Symphony finished third out of 16 teams in the 14-under Intermediate United States Tennis Association Northern Jr. Team Tennis Section Championships July 24-25 at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.

String Symphony won both matches during opening-day pool play, beating White Bear Lake 26-16 and Hastings 28-15 to qualify for the second day gold bracket.

In the gold bracket, the String Symphony received a first-round bye, beat Apple Valley 40-16 and lost 32-31 to eventual champion Eau Claire AAAs in the semifinals.

String Symphony captured third place with a 36-19 victory over Reed Sweat Family Tennis Center.

“Our goal was to make it to the national championships,” GMSS coach Brent Gunsbury said. “Although we came up one point short against Eau Claire, who clobbered Wayzata in the final, our kids still played exceptional tennis throughout the tournament.

“Now they know how talented they are and where they stack up against other tennis players in this part of the country. Most of our players are playing varsity level tennis even though they’re only 12 to 14 years old. I hope this inspires them to play more tennis in the future.

“The USTA Junior Team Tennis format is a wonderful forum for tennis players who want to have fun, do it as a team, and realize their potential.”

Eau Claire will represent USTA Northern at the JTT National Championships in Cayce, S.C., in October.
