VFW Baseball: Brainerd to play for title

COLD SPRING — A seven-run seventh inning will have the Brainerd sophomore VFW team playing for the District 6 championship Thursday as it defeated the St. Cloud Blue 9-8 Wednesday to advance.

Trailing 8-2 heading into the seventh, Dillon Solid led off with a double and Jamie Stall was hit by a pitching setting up Conor Gessell’s two-run triple. Gessell scored on Nate DeChaine’s sacrifice fly.

With one out and no one on base, the rally wasn’t over yet. Drew Sannes and Logan McElfresh singled, Tory Miller reached on an error and Logan Jones hit an RBI single followed by two more Blue’s errors.

McElfresh pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh for the save. He struck out the final batter on a 3-2 count with the bases loaded.

Stall pitched the win in relief of Beau Janousek, who went 4.2 innings allowing two hits and one run. He struck out three, walked two and hit one batter. He was also 3-3 with a double and a run scored.
