VFW Baseball: Blue bounces Brainerd from state berth

COLD SPRING — The Brainerd sophomore VFW team hit a wall instead of the ball Thursday.

Brainerd finished its season with a 23-15-1 record after falling twice to St. Cloud Blue in the double-elimination championship round of the District 6 tournament.

Brainerd lost Game One 3-0. Drew Sannes’ single to lead off the seventh inning was the lone Brainerd hit.

T.J. Graumann was tagged with the loss despite giving up just one earned run. He struck out eight and walked three and allowed five hits.

Brainerd lost Game Two 5-1. Conor Gessell was 2-4 and Logan McElfresh was 1-3 with a run scored.

Tory Miller pitched all six innings for Brainerd. He struck out six and walked one and allowed five runs with just four earned.

“We just didn’t hit the ball like we did the first three days,” said Brainerd coach Keith Peterson. “We couldn’t hit out of the hole against the their first pitcher and I think we lost some confidence after facing him.”

St. Cloud Blue advances to the state VFW tournament Thursday in Mankato.
