BOYS SOCCER: Lightning leads to opening loss for Warriors
ELK RIVER — The Brainerd Warriors appeared to be gaining steam when lightning cancelled Tuesday night’s season opener with about 20 minutes left, resulting in a 2-1 loss to the Elk River Elks in a Section 8-2A game.
Corey Tollefsrud scored Brainerd’s only goal at the 23:57 mark of the second half, assisted by Josh Wasniewski.
Storm Heyer put the Elks in front in the first 15 minutes, then the Elks added an own goal.
“The first half we got down 2-0 after one silly play,” Warriors coach Tony Smith said. “Another led to an own goal, but I thought we worked hard in the second half, and really pushed forward. We finally got a goal and I felt we were on the verge of our confidence gaining. I thought we were moving in the right direction, and lightning struck and we weren’t able to continue.
“I thought the team played very well. A lot of stuff we’ve been working on the past couple weeks I thought we worked very well. A lot of points that were emphasized at halftime seemed to help coming out of the break and we got the ball back.”
