GIRLS TENNIS: Warriors third at Delano tournament

DELANO — Morgan Steffen and Natalie Comeau teamed up to win the No. 2 doubles title and the Brainerd Warriors placed third at the Delano individual tournament Thursday.

Steffen-Comeau went unbeaten in three matches to capture their crown.

Brainerd’s Rosemary Hunter was third at No. 4 singles. The No. 1 doubles team of Megan Hintz-Caitlin Steffen finished third along with the No. 3 team of Brooke Mimmack-Ashley Fitterer.

“Our No. 2 doubles played really strong,” Warriors coach Ellen Fussy said. “We put Natalie Comeau, who has typically been a singles player, at 2 doubles with our seasoned senior, Morgan Steffen, and we saw a lot of good things.

“Our singles all battled, they worked hard. I thought their game grew even though they didn’t come out on top. They got some nice experience. We played 10 players, only five had seen any varsity play. Over half of our girls were pretty wet behind the ears but I think they held their own and represented Brainerd very well.”

Staples-Motley finished third, with Grace Wolhowe taking second at No. 2 singles.
