BIATHLON: Baker wins Minnesota roller ski race

Zean Baker of Nisswa, skiing for Nisswa NW Biathlon, was first overall in the 9.8-kilometer rollerski mass start biathlon race Thursday at Elk River.


Baker stayed in second or third position during the middle of the race while the lead shifted from Jakob Ellingson, Minneapolis, to Ty Hadrits of Brainerd, to CJ Merhar, Bemidji.

In the last shooting, Merhar missed four to Baker’s two, bent a ski on the last ski stage, and dropped to sixth while Baker moved up to the lead before the finish.

Jenna Ruzich, Baxter, the only female competitor, moved from eighth place to fourth overall. She held her own until the middle of the race and finished seventh.
