AMATEUR BASEBALL: Nisswa Lightning eliminated from tournament

ST. CLOUD – Veteran right-hander Mac Zachow pitched a complete game for Green Isle as the Irish eliminated the Nisswa Lightning from the Class C state tournament by a 7-3 score Sunday night at Dick Putz Field.

Zachow struck out four without a walk and allowed seven hits.

Logan Kalis, draftee from Fort Ripley, went six innings for Nisswa, allowing four runs on just three hits. Two of the hits he allowed were bunt singles. Kalis walked seven and hit one batter.

Reliever Luke Schumer went two innings and gave up three runs on four hits.

Aaron Jenkins went 3-4 with a double and scored two runs for Nisswa. Schumer was 2-4 with a double and RBI.

Nisswa’s Drew Boland led off the game with a single. With one out, Jenkins singled and Jason Roepke reached on an error, loading the bases. But Zachow got a 3-6-3 inning-ending double play to escape the threat.

The Lightning scored in the second as Mark Germain reached on an error. Tyler Wittwer bunted him to second and Roepke moved him to third with a groundout. Mike Zauhar then rolled an infield single up the third base line to score Germain for the game’s first run.

In the bottom of the third, the Irish batted around, scoring three times. Zachow tied the game 1-1 with a sacrifice fly. Kalis then walked three straight hitters, the last two with the bases loaded, to force in two runs.

Green Isle went up 4-1 in the fifth and Nisswa got a run back in the sixth when Jenkins led off with a base hit and moved to second on a groundout. Schumer doubled to score Jenkins and it was 4-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Schumer entered the game and gave up a leadoff single. He struck out the next hitter on a pitch in the dirt that allowed the runner to advance to second. The next hitter walked and Tyler Wittwer’s head-first diving catch in left left runners at first and second with two outs.

Pat Moriarty then belted a ground-rule RBI double to make it 5-2. Matt Breyer followed with a 2-run double to make it 7-2.

The Lightning scored their final run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Mark Germain. Zachow retired the Lightning in order in the ninth to end the game.
