GIRLS SWIMMING AND DIVING: Bemidji beats Warriors first time since 1996
Brainerd MN 506 James St. / PO Box 974 56401

Bemidji snapped a streak of nine straight dual-meet losses to Brainerd as the Lumberjacks defeated the Warriors 95-90 for a season-opening win Tuesday night at the Brainerd High School pool.

Brainerd beat Bemidji nine times between 2003-11. The teams didn’t swim in a dual meet between 1997-2002.

Tuesday’s meet was a nail-biter and was decided by the 400 free relay, the final event. Bemidji won in 3:50.99, Brainerd finished in 3:51.21.

“Our 400 free relay just got out-touched,” Warriors coach Dan Anderson said. “If we had won that event, we would have won the meet, but we didn’t. We went a 3:51 and that’s really fast for the first meet out.”

Brainerd’s Fallon Ryan was a double winner, pacing the 200 and 500 freestyles. She breezed to an almost 15-second win in the 500.

She also anchored the winning 200 free relay, which included Reilly Peterson, Sydney Erickson and Alyssa Williams.

Teammate Hannah McKeag won the 50 free and 100 back and diver Beth Etterman was the other Warrior winner.

“We had a lot of young kids in their first varsity meet that swam well,” Anderson said. “We came up just a tick short. I thought realistically going into the meet we would probably lose by about 15 points. We got within five and had a chance to win.”

In the junior varsity meet, Brainerd topped Bemidji 93-80 with first-place finishes from Annika Watson (200 IM), Olivia Klinger (diving), Haley Bradford (500 free), Greta Engen (100 backstroke) and Delaney Kennedy (100 breaststroke).

Also winning was the 200 medley relay of Engen, Kennedy, Alex Eigen and Bradford.
