GIRLS SOCCER: Warriors beat defending CLC champs in opener

ST. CLOUD — The Brainerd Warriors accomplished their first goal of the season as Emily Beltran scored a goal and assisted on another to lead Brainerd to a 2-1 season -opening win over St. Cloud Tech in a Central Lakes conference matchup at St. Cloud State University Thursday.

“Tech was conference champs last year and our first goal was to beat Tech,” said Brainerd coach Ricky Lacerte. “The girls were in good spirits and had good chemistry on the field. We had a lot of fun tonight. We love beating Tech.”

Shayna Vastila opened the scoring at the 8-minute mark with an assist from Beltran.

Beltran followed with another goal, with the assist coming from eighth-grader Ally Smith at 22:00 to give Brainerd a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

Tech’s Tatum Peterson tallied the only goal of the second half, unassisted, at the 7-minute mark.

“We shifted Beltran from forward to the midfield position and replaced her at forward with Smith who was pretty fast,” said Lacerte. “The move worked really well as it changed the game into a passing game from center field and distributed play all around the field.”

Brainerd goalkeeper Heather Campbell made four saves as the Warriors outshot Tech 15-5, including an 8-1 edge in the first half.

“We dominated the first half, as is obvious from Tech’s shots on goal,” said Lacerte. “We moved the ball around well.

“Our next big target is the (Alexandria) Cardinals,” he said. “They beat us twice last year and they are coming here Tuesday.”
