GIRLS TENNIS: Warriors romp past Willmar
The Brainerd Warriors won three singles matches and swept doubles as they defeated the Willmar Cardinals 6-1 in a Central Lakes Conference meet Thursday at Brainerd High School.
Megan Hintz, Rosie Hunter and Kristina Anderson won singles matches.
Chloe Glassman lost at No. 2 singles but played a competitive match, extending Willmar’s Cayle Hovland to three sets.
“Chloe is growing her game,” Warriors coach Ellen Fussy said. “Playing No. 2 is a hard position. We’re proud of her.”
Glassman, Hunter and Anderson are in their first year of varsity tennis.
“They have some room to grow,” Fussy said. “They haven’t had that experience. They haven’t had an opportunity because they’ve had kids in front of them, but they’re willing to work and get coached up.”
Doubles wins were by the teams of Sara Wennerstrand-Caitlin Steffen, Morgan Steffen-Natalie Comeau and Ashley Fitterer-Brooke Mimmack.
“The girls are getting better,” Fussy said. “The things they need to work on, they’re working on. We’re happy with our progress but we have more progress to make.
“We’ve been changing our lineup and the girls are willing to do that, so it’s been fun, and we’re off to a good start.”
