COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Valesano MIAC Defensive Player of Week

Brainerd High School graduate Mike Valesano of St. Thomas University was named the inaugural MIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the 2012 season after the Tommies’ 27-24 season-opening win over UW-Eau Claire last weekend.

Valesano, who missed the 2011 season with an injury, recorded a career-high 11 solo tackles, including one for a loss. He also recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff that helped lead to the Tommies’ first touchdown.

His efforts helped the Tommies rally for 13 points in the final four minutes to pull the victory.

Valesano is a preseason nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team, which honors players for their efforts in the community.

The Tommies will try to continue their regular-season win streak after going 10-0 in each of the last two seasons when they host UW-River Falls at 1:10 p.m. Saturday in St. Paul.
