Warrior sophomores open with victory

Despite committing four turnovers, the Brainerd Warrior sophomore football team opened the season with a 38-14 win against the Rocori Spartans Thursday at Cold Spring.

Scoring for the Warriors in the first half was Cole DeRosier, with a 5-yard run. He also ran in the 2-point conversion as the Warriors led 8-6 at the half.

In the second half, Evan Brecht scored touchdowns on runs of 12 and 15 runs. He also threw 20 yards to Chris Veith for another TD.

Cole DeRosier and Quinn McElfresh each scored on 2-point conversions. Hayden Bukowski returned a kickoff 80 yards. Zack Winger was 2 for 2 on extra-point kicks.

Defensively, the Warriors received interceptions from Tom Eschenbacher and Will Stolski.

The Warriors play at St. Cloud Tech at 5 p.m. next Thursday.

Fight Mafia members compete

Members of the Fight Mafia in Brainerd won four bouts on the Full Nelson Promotions “Rumble In The Lakes” card Aug. 24 at Alexandria.

Travis Sykes defeated Marc Hummel via knockout at 25 seconds of the second round.

Matt Thurstin beat Jordan Barrett via submission at 2:59 of the first.

Gary Granholm defeated Tyler Larsen via knockout at 10 seconds of the first.

Jake Immel beat Patrick Neurer via technical knockout at 1:45 of the first.

Jordan Thurstin was defeated by Nicholas Palmer via submission at 27 seconds of the first.

In “Magic City Mayhem” Aug. 25 at Minot, N.D., Kevin Tjaden of the Fight Mafia defeated Silas Ortley via submission kimura at 3:10 of Round One.

On Oct. 19 at Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen, Fight Mafia members will participate on a card put on by Northstar Combat, Full Nelson Promotions and Royalty Fighting Entertainment.

Horseshoe tournaments at Genola Arena

The Minnesota State Horseshoe Pitching Tournament is scheduled to run through Monday at the Genola Arena near Pierz.

LAYSA offers fall program for youths

The Lakes Area Youth Soccer Association (LAYSA) will offer a competitive soccer program for boys and girls ages 8-11 this fall.

Four group skills training sessions will run from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays Sept. 11, 18, 25 and Oct. 2, at Forestview Middle School in Baxter.

Participants will then play in the Fall Cup Tournament Oct. 6-7, at the National Sports Center in Blaine.

Cost is $50 with families covering travel, lodging and meal expenses.

Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals return to BIR in 2013

Dates for Brainerd International Raceway’s 2013 Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals will be Aug. 15-18, the NHRA announced Wednesday.

It will be the 32nd year the NHRA has brought the world’s best drag racers to BIR. The race features Top Fuel dragsters, Funny Cars, Pro Stock cars and motorcycles and some of the top Sportsman drag racers in the U.S.

The NHRA has unveiled Mello Yello as its new series sponsor. Next year, the series will be called the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

Mud Run Sunday at Pillager

The third annual mud run is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, at Pillager.

Participants can walk or jog a 6-kilometer course. For those who don’t want to get wet in three mud/water pits, they can be avoided by walking around them on the “chicken course.” There is also a one-half-mile kids race for little mud-lovers.

This is a fund-raiser and a family event to benefit the Lakes Area Disability Ministry.
