Area Tennis: Cardinals capture win over Pequot

STAPLES — Mikayla Wing, Grace Wolhowe and Emily Israelson all won in straight sets to pace Class 1A’s 12th0-ranked Staples-Motley Cardinals to a 5-2 Mid-State Conference victory over 14th-ranked Pequot Lakes Thursday.

Eli Heggerston-Carly Fyle battled back from a first set loss to knock off Maggie O’Keefe-Kelsey Zetah 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).

“I thought we competed well and I’m especially proud of our No. 1 doubles team,” said Pequot head coach Monica Sergent. “They played one of the best matches of the season. S-M’s No. 1 doubles team is very good so I’m very proud of them.”

FOLEY — Claire Browning battled Class 1A’s 10th-ranked Abby Kantor through two tie-breaker sets before falling in the Aitkin Gobblers 7-0 loss to 10th-ranked Foley Thursday.

“We showed that we can be competitive with ranked teams,” said Aitkin head coach Cindy Walz. “We lack experience, but we will gain that from each match.”
