Warrior swimming and diving: Warriors leave winners, come home second

PARK RAPIDS — Fallon Ryan picked up two individual first-place finishes and anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team as Brainerd finished second in the Park Rapids Invite.

Staples-Motley’s Jaelin Beachy won the 50 freestyle and set a meet and pool record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.71 to lead the Cardinals to seventh.

“It was just outstanding, she started the day out with her fastest split of the season in the 200 medley relay,” Cardinals coach Bruce Onischuk said. “Then to go on and do what she did in the breast stroke and 50 meter freestyle was incredible.”

Ryan’s win in the 500 freestyle set a meet and pool record as she won the event in 5:39.17. She also won the 200 freestyle.

McKeag won the 100 backstroke in 1:03.00.

The foursome of Reilly Peterson, Alyssa Williams, McKeag and Ryan set a pool and meet record in the 400 free relay with a winning time of 3:49.56. The victory was thought to give Brainerd the invite victory. However...

“Going into the last relay, Brainerd held a one point lead over Melrose,” Brainerd head coach Dan Anderson said. “Whoever won the 400 free relay would win the meet. Both teams had its best relays entered. It was an amazing race. Both teams broke the existing pool record and Brainerd came out on top by 5/10ths of a second. Brainerd wins the meet.

“We load up the bus and head home. A few miles out of town we learn that there was a scoring error. A Melrose swimmer had not been scored in the 200 IM. Melrose wins by 2.

“Oh well, it was a great meet. We swam very well. Every swimmer came through for us and scored points. It was a great team effort.”
