Warrior Girls Soccer: Beltran boots Brainerd over Cards

ALEXANDRIA — Emily Beltran tallied the lone goal in Brainerd’s 1-0 win over the Alexandria Cardinals Thursday that extended the Warriors lead in the Central Lakes Conference standings.

Brainerd defeated the Cardinals earlier in the season 5-0 on Sept. 4 and Thursday’s win leaves the Warriors on top of the conference with 10 points followed by Alexandria in second with 8.5.

Beltran’s goal, assisted by Jenny Hendrickson, came at 39:24 in the first half on a bullet from the left side that the Cardinal goalie couldn’t stop.

“This game was very close and was by far our toughest competition this year,” said Brainerd coach Ricky Lacerte. “They’re a very tough team, but we just kept pushing and pushing and never let up.”

Brainerd goalkeeper Heather Campbell only needed to make two saves as the Warriors outshot Alex 8-2.

The Warriors are still undefeated at 7-0-3 and face Moorhead Saturday for a key Section 8-2A game.

“That will be an important matchup for seeding in the section tournament,” said Lacerte. “Last year, they beat us 1-0 (in Moorhead), but Beltran wasn’t with us and the match is on our field this year.”
