DULUTH — Aitkin ninth-grader Claire Browning turned in the best finish by an area netter as she captured third place in the Section 7-1A individual tournament Tuesday.

Browning defeated Foley’s Hattie Scott in the quarterfinals before losing 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, to Katelyn Rice from Eveleth/Gilbert in the semis. She dispatched Lexi Brascugli, also of E/G, for third place.

Browning just missed a trip to the state individual tournament as only the top two singles players and the top two doubles teams advance.

“For a ninth-grader, she showed great maturity in her shot selection and the way she played bodes well for her for the next few years,” said Aitkin coach Cindy Walz.

Also in singles play, Crosby-Ironton’s Gabrielle Hudrlik lost her quarterfinal round match to Rice.

In doubles competition, C-I’s Meredith Silgen and Shannon Lundgren, both juniors, defeated Aitkin’s Lisa Anderson and Malinda Lahmann-Sharbonda 6-1, 6-0, to advance to the semis where they lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 to Amy Terrio and Kayla Young from E/G. Their season ended with a loss in the third-place match to Aimee Allen and Chelsea Judnick, also from E/G.
