FOOTBALL: Brainerd sophomores finish season 6-1

The Brainerd Warriors sophomores beat the Alexandria Cardinals 48-16 Tuesday to finish the season 6-1.

The offensive line of Garret Smith, Mike Horton, John Bostrom, Anthony Cory, Kyler Kennedy and Teddy Nelson dominated the Alexandria defensive line as Brainerd rolled up 341 yards and scored 41 points before Alexandria reached the end zone.

Hayden Bukowski had a big game as a receiver, punt returner and quarterback and was named the team’s offensive player of the game.

In the first quarter, Steven Severson scored on a 10-yard pass from Even Brecht. Severson also scored the 2-point conversion.

Brecht scored on the last play of the first quarter on a 5-yard run. He also scored the only points in the second quarter on an 11-yard run.

Cole DeRosier ran 65 yards for a TD on the Warriors’ third play after halftime. DeRosier added the 2-point conversion.

Zach Winger added a 53-yard TD run in the third and a 5-yard run in the fourth. Winger also kicked the extra point.

Chris Veith scored the Warriors’ last TD on a 1-yard run. Winger kicked the extra point.

On the defensive side of the ball, Jaquon Cogshell intercepted two passes and made several big plays to be named the Warriors’ defensive player of the game. The defensive line of Isaac Stone, Matt Thompson, Teddy Nelson and Anthony Cory contained the Cardinals’ ground game.
