AREA VOLLEYBALL: TRF denies W-DC fifth straight trip to state

BAGLEY — Thief River Falls snapped Wadena-Deer Creek’s 4-year stranglehold on the championship but had to rally in dramatic fashion to shade the Wolverines 3-2 in the Section 8-2A title match Saturday night.

W-DC won the first two games 32-30 and 29-27 before the Prowlers dug deep and recorded 25-14, 25-17, 15-11 wins to capture the first section championship in program history.

Emily Miron collected 31 kills, 15 digs and 15 blocks for W-DC, the No. 2 seed in the South Subsection. TRF (26-5) was the No. 1 seed in the North.

Caitlin Volkmann added 22 kills, 26 digs and seven blocks for W-DC, which was ranked ninth in the final Class 2A poll.

Melissa Moenkedick contributed 13 blocks, Hope Theisen 35 digs and Heather Theisen 58 set assists for the Wolverines.
