Class 2A state diving: Brainerd's Etterman advances

MINNEAPOLIS — Happy, but not satisfied.

That’s the best way to describe Beth Etterman after Thursday’s diving preliminaries and semifinals in the Class 2A state diving competition at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Etterman is happy to be diving in Saturday’s finals, but she finds herself in 15th place out of 20 divers heading into the final three dives.

The Brainerd junior was in 12th place after the prelims with 147.4 points, but one missed dive dropped her three spots with a 241.60 score.

“She missed one dive and a couple weren’t as crisp as she has been hitting them,” said Brainerd diving coach Mary Streiff. “That takes its toll down here. We snuck in, but we have three solid dives left.”

Etterman’s goal for Saturday is to podium. That hasn’t changed. The top eight divers medal and Streiff still likes her divers’ chances. Only 15 points separates Etterman from sixth place. The state veteran has three solid dives remaining.

“The goal is still do able,” Streiff said. “She needs three clean dives on Saturday, but we need to also see what everyone else does. With her three dives remaining she can make up 15 points in the finals.”

Wayzata’s Val Wollman is in striking distance at sixth place with 256.55. Leading the pack is Section 8-2A champion Lexi Tenenbaum of Maple Grove. The senior has 321.95 points.
